My Full Playstation VR Review
INTRO
- The PlayStation VR, or PSVR, is the most recent “major” VR headset to hit the markets. This device operates differently from the Rift and VIVE in the sense that it does not require a PC and instead is connected to the PlayStation 4 game console.
- It sure does look cool - the headset specifically. It’s very comfortable, with adjustable and moveable parts.
- The games I’ve played on it are definitely in VR and tons of fun.
- It does have a couple of major setbacks if you’re looking to watch porn:
Tracking latency: PSVR has the highest tracking latency at 18ms. This means the visual and audio content are not perfectly synched with your head movements and this delay can cause feelings of motion sickness.
No 3D playback: You cannot play 3D content through the PSVR. If you’re bent on watching VR porn through it then you’re going to have to settle for watching it in 360° but in 2D. There is no plan by Sony to update this.***There is a possible workaround I’ll discuss further down in Additional Support.
PREREQUISITE TECHNOLOGY
- You’ll need a PS4. The PSVR is not compatible on any other PlayStation console like the PS3 or PS Vita.
- You’ll also need a PlayStation camera and PlayStation controller
For watching porn, you’re not going to necessarily need the PlayStation Move Motion Controllers, which are really better suited for gaming purposes. You can just use a regular PlayStation controller.
HOW TO USE
- My first time setting this up proved not necessarily difficult, but a little time-consuming.
- You basically have to turn this:
- Into this:
- It’s not hard though! Just follow these steps.
**These step-by-step instructions assume that you already have a PlayStation Camera hooked up to your PS4 and that your PS4 is hooked up to your TV.
1. Disconnect the HDMI cable that’s running from your PS4 to your TV. Attach one end to the VR processor so that the processor is connected to your TV.
2. Take the HDMI cable that is labelled no.1 (included in your VR package) and use it to connect your PS4 to the VR processor.
3. Take the USB cable labelled no.2 (included in your VR package) and use it connect the PS4 (front port) to the processor.
4. Plug in the power supply for the processor.
5. With the headset connection cable, labelled no.4, slide back the front right side of the processor to open the ports. Line up the symbols on the plyugs with the symbols over the ports. Slide the cover back.
6. Attach cable no.4 to cable no.5, which is directly attached to the headset. Make sure to also match the symbols correctly.
7. Attach any headphones you may want to use to the inline remote on cable no.5.
8. Make sure you’re in front of the PlayStation camera and no more than a few feet away as this is how the camera needs to track your head movements.
9. Blue tracking lights on the headset will begin to flash, indicating your setup was done correctly. High five!
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
- VR technology can be a little finicky at times, but never fear if you’re experiencing difficulties with your PSVR, as the internet is full of troubleshooting advice that will get you back on the right track in no time.
- The good folks at PlayStation are more than happy to provide technical support. This is the official PSVR help page. And below are really useful YouTube videos made by PlayStation to provide additional support for the initial setup:
PlayStation VR Set Up Tutorial - Part 1 - Unboxing
PlayStation VR Set Up Tutorial - Part 2 - Putting it together
PlayStation VR Set Up Tutorial - Part 3 - Setting Up VR Tracking
- Do not ask PlayStation to provide support for watching porn on your headset. They will tell you the same thing the Oculus & VIVE support teams told me - they don’t support porn.
- **I’ve read reports of a recent app that might be able to play 3D content through the PSVR. It’s called Vrideo. I have a feeling there will be other 3rd party apps in the future. Something to keep an eye out for.
CONCLUSION
- PSVR might be great at playing games in VR, but it’s definitely not made to play VR content.
- The Oculus Rift and the HTC VIVE were also not designed with the intention of playing porn, but because they operate with a PC instead of a PS4, it’s much easier to watch more immersive content.
- High latency is a big turn off for me. I don’t like feeling nauseous.
- It’s the least expensive one, that is if you don’t already have a PS4. But, then again, the Rift and VIVE both require PCs with pretty strong specs.
- I don’t recommend buying the PSVR if your sole intention is to watch porn.
