Here’s a question that’s been on everybody’s mind since even before the rise and popularity of all these hardcore VR sex scenes: Will VR sex ever replace real sex? It’s a contentious issue that promises to pester our very nature. Sex is kind of a big deal as it’s key to the perpetuation of our species, and aside from being a whole lot of fun, it’s also important to our mental and physical wellbeing. Never before has such a facsimile of sex been so realistic and available to us and it’s got some people up in arms.
The Importance of a Personal Touch
The idea behind virtual porn is simple. Put on a headset and you become immersed in the action. Nothing is left to the imagination as you are virtually in the room acting out the scene. It’s exciting, but naturally there are some detractors. Some who have spoken out against the use of VR claim that people need more of a personal touch. In other circles, it’s not uncommon to see virtual reality, and other kinds of sex tech, discussed as if they’re a replacement for sex itself. But what about masturbation? There are certainly anti-masturbation proponents in our culture, but who listens to those nut cases anyway?
Are We Using Technology For Good or Evil?
Certainly, there will be people who abuse the technology, but this happens with all technologies. Video games are fun, entertaining and provide a challenge, but sometimes people do get addicted to them. Similarly, nuclear technology can provide a whole city with unlimited energy, or it could be used in an explosive device for nothing but pure destruction. The problem is never the technology itself, but how we use it. We must be aware of issues like isolation and addiction. For people who are socially awkward or suffer from typical conditions, maybe VR porn will change the quality of their lives. But for the majority of the population, it will mostly just be a fun pastime.
It’s Just a Hobby – Enjoy It
When push comes to shove, VR porn is just that: porn. And there have been anti-porn crusades ever since the first cavewoman caught her caveman jerking his salami to the drawings on the cave wall. Immersive sex can’t replace sexual intercourse because it’s nothing like real intercourse. Real intercourse has an actual purpose and is still vastly different, because typically, it involves two real people in the flesh! That being said, there’s nothing stopping two real people from enjoying the benefits of 180° 3D scenes together or apart just for the fun of it, or for any number of other reasons.

It’s important to be reflective about both the dangers and benefits that new technologies offer humanity, but it’s even more important not to become hysterical over the issue and to remain rational. But that’s just one VR porn expert’s opinion. Let me know what you think about this issue in the comments below and follow me on Twitter.
